ON THE COMMON
WHO: Led by PAUL DUNION and JOHN GUARNASCHELLI.
Surrender. Can you think of a word less likely to appeal to men? It arouses every fear of powerlessness and defeat. Worse, it denies the very heart of manhood. The last thing a real man does is surrender.
Yet, Joseph Campbell defines the man questing for his own soul as a "hero of self achieved submission." For him, it's the very heart of manhood, of my self.
Resistance to Surrender takes many forms: Stubbornness. Inflation. False hope. Hopelessness. Bravado. Striving. Machismo. Perpetual struggle. New Age optimism. Affirmations. Letting go. And a zillion other subtle forms of Denial.
So when the Village of Brothers gathers this April we'll ask: How Are You With Surrender? What is Surrender? How can I experience it? What is it the doorway to? Can I really be more of a man, more my self, by Surrendering? Anyway, Surrendering to what?
We'll gather again on the shore of the lake at Camp Hi Rock, just as the new Spring begins to take hold. We'll use ritual, music, work, play, talk, and the Sweat Lodge to explore what each one of us feels about Surrender.
There will be free time to experience the lake and the hills to be alone together.
And there will be ample opportunity for each man to share what he experiences about Surrender with the Brothers in the Village. PLEASE JOIN US. PLEASE SHARE WHAT YOU KNOW OR FIND OUT ABOUT SURRENDER WITH US.
